The “Tabungaw,” “Upo” or Gourd Hat!
|
“Tabungaw,” in Ilocano, “Upo” in Filipino, (White) Gourd in English, is a vegestable-crop that can be made into a hat which Ilocano’s are famous for. It is unfortunate, however, that the art of making the “gourd hat” is now a dying art. You may want to know how this veggie becomes a durable hat that farmers in Ilocos use, but have now become a (mere) novelty or souvenir for some. So everyone needs to get their best GOURD HAT and/or GOURD MASK together and wear it for the parade on Saturday afternoon at the Florida Gourd Society Gourd Show 2008 and help to keep this art from becoming a dying art. The parade will take place immediately after dinner just prior to the auction. For additional pictures of the TEXAS GOURD HAT PARADE see: http://texasgourdsociety.org/TGS2004parade.html Now I KNOW the Florida Gourd Society members and friends can do better that the TEXAS members. PRIZES MAY BE AWARDED. |
