WHAT TO DO WITH WHITE BIRCH BARK

Description: Students will be taught how to apply different thickness of birch bark to a gourd creating a sample gourd using at least three different techniques and how to separate the layers of white birch bark (Picture is a sample of one technique that will be taught). 

Students MUST bring: - Dremel or small drill, drill bits - 5/64 and 1/8, utility or exacto knife with a sharp pointed blade, cutting board or cutting mat, ruler or tape measure, pencil and paper for notes.

GOURDIN' SAFARI ELEPHANT PIN

Instructor: Terry & Sandy Jordan       Level: ALL             Students: 15     Fee: $25 MEMBERS      $30 NON MEMBERS 

Description: Participants will create an elephant pin from quickwood and a small jewelry gourd.  The participants will then paint the elephant using acrylic paint.  

Students MUST bring: - Paint brushes #12 flat, #8 flat, 1/2 " rake and #2 script liner, water basin, retractable razor utility knife and a creative spirit.

CROCHETING ON A GOURD

Instructor: Judy Roberts       Level: ALL but will need basic crochet skills       Students: 10     Fee: $40 MEMBERS      $45 NON MEMBERS 

Description: Students will select a pre-cut gourd or gourd piece which has been cleaned and sprayed for their protection.  The finish on the exterior will be a simple wax finish that is applied an buffed.  Directions will be given  in the handout for finishing the interior after class to allow students time for the crochet technique.  They will learn to space and piece the gourd around the rim for stitching.  They will then attach a rim cover, beads, fringes or fabric..their choice...after which they will learn to crochet on the rim. A basic knowledge of slip stitch, chain stitch and single crochet is needed  A handout with directions and picture will be given to each student.     

Students MUST bring: - Crochet Hook size D, F and G.

Kit Fee $4.00 - Kit includes:  Rim trim and a choice of crochet materials.  This fee will be paid to the instructor on the day of class.  .

AFRICAN MASK

Description: A half day class to give your imagination free reign. 

Supplies:  Dremel, woodburning tool.  Students MUST email instructor at corar1020@aol.com for list of class supplies. 

Instructor will have cleaned, painted interior gourd halves for sale at a price of $4 each or student can bring their own prepared half gourd.

CORN BOWL

Instructor: Susan Nonn       Level: ALL           Students: 15     Fee: $50 MEMBERS      $55 NON MEMBERS

Description: This carved gourd bowl will provide an opportunity to try different carving burs to create three dimensional kernels of corn.  Basic pyrography (simple straight lines) will be taught with the use of Press and Seal.  project will be finished with color if time allows.  

NOTE:  Carrie Dearing has given Suzi permission to teach her corn design.  Suzi has added a $10 design fee per student which will be sent to Carrie following the event.

Supplies:  Woodburner (the inexpensive Walnut Hollow works)-blade tip or wedge tip, Dremel or other carving tool with the following two burs #199, 116 (instructor will have some burs for sale if you cannot find these two, dust mask.

LET'S ADD TEXTURE!

Instructor: Hellen M. Martin       Level: ALL           Students: 20     Fee: $55 MEMBERS      $60 NON MEMBERS

Description: Use a very "unique" product that adds texture beyond belief on a gourd.  Will select a finish for their gourd from two different styles.  There are endless possibilities for final results with this technique.  All student will receive a 21 page instructional booklet with 33 photo for reference after the class.  Booklet shows step-by-step how to put on the texture and do the finish.  "Rim will also be taught."  

Supplies:  Desire to have lots of fun and hair dryer or hot air gun.

VASE WITH EMBOSSED INSET - THIS CLASS IS FULL

Instructor: Mary Segreto       Level: ALL           Students: 12     Fee: $50 MEMBERS      $55 NON MEMBERS

Description: Learn to apply and glue a flat bottom on a gourd to make it stand straight, then create an ultra fine finish and add an embossed design, all using non-toxic products.   You will learn how to Cut and fit a flat bottom on your gourd, create a satin smooth surface, apply ink dye evenly, apply textured medium using stencil and finshing and highlighting with paint and waxes.   

Supplies:  NONE - instructor will supply everything.
