3-D Feather Carving

Instructor: Bonnie Gibson         Level: Advanced          Students: 20     Fee: $45

Description:  Carving an eagle, turkey or red tailed hawk feather is a great way to learn

basic dimensional carving techniques.  The concepts of visualizing high-relief dimensional carving will be discussed, and additional techniques such as undercutting, rounding and specialized carving will enable you to create a feather that is dramatic and realistic in appearance.    You'll use either carving burs or woodburning to add the feather barbs, and will learn some techniques to finish your feather with a minimal amount of  paint (Students will learn feather carving only.  Other decorative applications show in the photo can be added as desired after class is over.)

Students should bring a Dremel, Foredom or other similar rotary tool and any burs you have on hand.  Bring a good quality dust mask, a woodburner with a skew tip, and  please bring a cleaned gourd that is suitable for carving (at least 1/4" thick is preferable).  Paint will be  provided.

Note: this class will teach the Feather carving technique only, so you will not go home with a finished gourd.  In many cases, the same gourd may be used for more than one technique class if you wish.
