PATCH DISCUSSION
1) Patch Activities were sent out via
e-mail within the last few days. The FGS website will also have
them posted for Seminole Patch.
2) Gourd Artists Gathering held in Cherokee,
NC will be held June 6-8.
3) FGSI Show
A) Judy reported that the FGSI Booth
made about $400 less than last year. The booth will be turned over
to others to run next year.
Judy said
t-shirts were still available, and she had some with her. Shirt
sales were down this year. But sales of previous year’s shirts
at reduced cost help to offset the expenses.
B) Joy read e-message from Tonia
Owens, GSI president, thanking everyone for help.
C) Joy read e-message from Selma Carrow,
show chair, announcing the Breakout meeting to be held in April possibly
in Paisley. Date to be set. All Patch leaders and volunteers
are asked to attend to suggest improvements for next year’s show.
[Show will be held in Palatka again next year,] Show improvements
and theme will be topics.
D) Patch members made the following
suggestions for show improvements.
*Must have a speaker system in place for the
dinner. It destroys the evening to have to shout and NOT BE
HEARD.
*NEED TO PUBLICIZE the raffle baskets on the
net and with huge signs on the FAIRGOURNDS. We had people who
stumbled upon us the last day saying they would have
supported the raffle IF THEY HAD KNOWN.
* LIMIT GROWERS AS SUGGESTED
* JUDGES NEED TO HAVE A HANDOUT AS A
REMINDER OF THE JUDGING CRITERIA-% FOR CREATIVITY,% FOR EXECUTION
ETC. Therese has all that info from when she led
a workshop for FGSI!
* Sunday classes to begin at 8:30 so peope
can GET ON THE ROAD even if they are willing to take a class on Sunday.
* Bigger and better signage along major
highway.
* Workshops - Have a wider variety of type
techniques taught (lots of painting this year)
* Limit number of classes per instructor
* Gourd instrument entertainment (Someone
was good on uke.)
*
Would like to have a shirt design that is more dignified or classic so
could wear to more functions.
E) Patch members
made these suggestions for show theme.
* Hung Up on Gourds
* Gourd Circus in the Sun
* [Something to tie into bike week or boy
scout derby.]
4) Joy talked about September Gourd
Retreat to be held on September 19-21. The famous Bonnie
Gibson will be the featured artist. Workshops by other instructors
will also take place. Selma is in the process of arranging and
asked that we keep informed through the FGSI website. Joy will
also contact us when more detalils are known.
5) Joy said that the three Patch
Albums containing minutes and pictures of the 86 Seminole Patch meetings
which have take place since March 1999 were on display for members to
look at.
6) Diane, Bill, Louise, Lila and
Marcia shared gourd projects they had brought in. At this
time, gourdians had a chance to see the faux raku gourd that Maxine had
done and that will be similar to the activity to be done in
May. Gourding tips were discussed. Diane and Louise
talked about what they had learned at the show about gourd carving with
a dremel. They said steel tips rotate in only one direction so it
is best to keep them headed the same way as you are using them. However,
titanium tips can go in any direction. They cost more, but
the quality cut makes it worthwhile. Betsy Roberts, a carving
instructor at the show, sells these kinds of tips. They run from
$9-15 but do last a lifetime.
Patch Activity: “Anything
Goes”
Gourdians brought their own projects to work
on. In addition, Diane taught a few who had missed the Ocean Drum
patch activity how to assemble them. Joy and Bill cut
gourds for those needing to have that done for upcoming acti
